ELAC Vela BS 403.2 is the updated entry-level bookshelf model in ELAC’s refined Vela 2.0 series. It replaces the earlier BS 403 and brings the latest JET 6 Air Motion Transformer (AMT) tweeter while retaining the distinctive trapezoidal cabinet design and AS-XR crystal-membrane mid/bass driver.

Design and Build

The BS 403.2 is a compact two-way bass-reflex standmount measuring 362 × 191 × 240 mm (H × W × D) and weighing 7.1 kg each. The cabinet has a trapezoid shape that angles slightly rearward, with a convex baffle and an aluminium bottom plate that incorporates a down-firing reflex port. This geometry aids time alignment, improves dispersion, and allows flexible placement closer to walls or on stands.

Finish options are high-gloss black, high-gloss white, and high-gloss walnut (the latter usually carrying a small premium). Build quality is excellent, with a premium, furniture-grade appearance that suits modern interiors. Twin sets of binding posts support bi-wiring or bi-amping. Optional magnetic grilles are available.

Drivers and Technology

  • Tweeter: ELAC’s handmade JET 6 AMT. This is the key upgrade over the previous JET 5. It features a revised aluminium-foil “voice coil” layout and an improved horizontally slotted waveguide for better dispersion, smoother response, and refined integration with the mid/bass driver. The JET design is known for exceptional speed, low distortion, and extended high-frequency response (well beyond 20 kHz).
  • Mid/bass: 150 mm (6-inch) AS-XR aluminium/paper sandwich cone with ELAC’s signature “crystal membrane” surface patterning. This increases stiffness, reduces breakup modes, and extends the driver’s usable range.
  • Crossover: Optimised network at 2.4 kHz.

Key specifications (manufacturer):

  • Frequency response: 41 Hz – 50 kHz (IEC 268-5)
  • Sensitivity: 86 dB (2.83 V/1 m)
  • Nominal impedance: 4 Ω (minimum 3.2 Ω at ~260 Hz)
  • Recommended amplifier power: 40–200 W per channel
  • Nominal/peak power handling: 70 W / 100 W

Independent measurements (Hi-Fi News) show real-world sensitivity closer to 84.7–87 dB depending on the band, solid bass extension to around 53 Hz (–6 dB), and a relatively demanding impedance that dips low with significant phase angles. It is not a particularly easy load for budget amplifiers.

Sound Quality

The BS 403.2 delivers a fast, detailed, and engaging performance that punches well above its compact size. The JET 6 tweeter is the star: it provides smooth, extended, and highly resolved treble with excellent air, speed, and low distortion. High frequencies remain refined and non-fatiguing even at higher levels, with fine detail retrieval on cymbals, strings, and spatial cues.

The midrange is clean, precise, and well integrated, carrying the speed and clarity of the tweeter downward. Vocals and instruments have good presence and separation without harshness. Bass is surprisingly punchy, controlled, and extended for a 6-inch two-way of this size—tuneful and dynamic rather than overly bloated, with enough scale and weight to satisfy in small-to-medium rooms. Dynamics are lively and the speakers handle complex material without congestion.

Soundstaging is spacious and well-defined, with solid imaging and a sense of depth. The overall character is energetic, transparent, and musical—more “hi-fi precise” than warm or romantic, yet never clinical. With appropriate amplification the low-end scale and impact can belie the modest cabinet volume.

Strengths

  • Outstanding JET 6 tweeter: speed, clarity, extension, and refinement.
  • Surprisingly strong, controlled bass and dynamics for the size.
  • Excellent build and distinctive, high-quality aesthetics.
  • Good integration and coherent presentation across the range.
  • Flexible placement thanks to the down-firing port and angled cabinet.
  • Clear upgrade over the original BS 403 via the new tweeter and crossover.

Limitations

  • Relatively low sensitivity and a demanding 4 Ω load—benefits from a capable amplifier with good current delivery.
  • Bass extension, while impressive for the size, still has physical limits compared with larger speakers or subwoofer-assisted systems.
  • Premium pricing places it in a competitive segment against other high-quality standmounts.

Verdict

The ELAC Vela BS 403.2 is a refined, high-performance compact loudspeaker that successfully combines elegant design with genuine sonic ability. The JET 6 tweeter elevates detail, air, and refinement, while the AS-XR mid/bass driver delivers punch and scale that many larger designs struggle to match in small rooms. It rewards quality amplification and careful placement, and it works well for both stereo music and as part of a high-end home-theatre system.

If you value transparency, speed, and a modern, precise presentation in a stylish, space-efficient package, the BS 403.2 is an excellent choice in its class. It stands as a strong demonstration of ELAC’s engineering strengths and a worthy evolution of the Vela lineup.
