At first glance, there is nothing special in the appearance of Naim Allae – well, maybe only woofer is installed above the tweeter, not vice versa. However, you will find in them many distinctive and sometimes puzzling design solutions. Allae are two-way composite systems with an external crossover (it is placed on the back wall of the lower section). Why are there such difficulties? First, the signal can be sent to speakers bypassing filters, thus releasing bi-amping with active separation. Second, a 20-cm woofer has very soft suspension and requires a special acoustic design. Therefore, the body is made craftily. The gap between upper and lower section is a bass-reflex. A 19-mm tweeter is installed on a spring-loaded plate. Weights of matching mass are glued through elastic polymer to its chamber as well as to the woofer’s magnetic system. They absorb vibrations, which otherwise would go to the body’s walls.

These speaker systems are radically different by sound too. Their signature forever sinks into the mind – I’m sure that even after years the “voice” of Naim Alle will not be confused with any other.

The specifics of unusually by design British speaker systems is that having not very ideal musical balance they are able to play the whole band up to HF with striking clarity. Yes, these speakers put accents in other way that is especially noticeable at the listening to expressive music that requires good bass support. Few competitors can compare with Allae by informative content and naturalness of playing of live music. They exude an emotional content of vocals brilliant. Even big group of different acoustic instruments – no matter what volume it is- will be shown by Allae with maximal fairness: in relief and in microscopic details.

Harmonic resolution of these speaker systems is at an incredibly high level! However, spatial separation is worth of praise. Sometimes the problems with transfer of remote sources appear only at the edges of stereo base.

But there are upsetting moments. When the movement amplitude of the woofer’s diffuser reaches extreme values, sharp and unpleasant by ear distortions may appear in the sound. I won’t refer this to serious disadvantages – this happens only at very low basses, which are typical for very exotic drums and (much more rarely) theatrical effects. Coloring of the upper part of the middle range is more noticeable: you should get used to a “holiday” lightened character of sound.

STRENGTH:Fast response. very clean treble and extended bass. Good efficiency and although rated at 150w will sound loud with a quality 30w plus amplifier
Not over sensitive to positioning.

WEAKNESS:Can sound a bit cold and clinical so pay attention to other parts of system and listening room furnishing so as not to compount this tendency. Likes class a equipnent.

An acceptably sized true monitoring speaker with fast response and amazing clarity. Deep bass extension with little overhang. Superbly clean and extended treble. Handles high volumes gracefully but remains clean at low listening levels. Punishing to poorly engineered recordings but revealing a real ambience with the best recordings even older ones. Good on pop. Superb on jazz. Amazing on chamber and orchestral. Excellent for opera and organ music.
Well worh the current full market price.(£2200)

NAIM ALLAE LOUDSPEAKERS (PAIR) – Product Description

The Allae offers truly stunning musical performance that will always enhance the pleasure of your listening experience. Technically this speaker has many features of interest, including the separation of the drive units within their own enclosures, which is now a standard feature of Naim designs reducing mechanical interference and thereby enabling predictable acoustic performance not possible in normally configured loudspeaker designs. The critical interface between the speaker and the floor is controlled by means of a leaf-spring and cast aluminium, spiked stand fitted to the base of the cabinet. Installation and assembly of the Allae is simplicity itself, with the bass/mid cabinet sitting neatly on Naim PIPs (precision interface pins) mounted on the top face of the bottom cabinet. The PIPs define the air gap between the two cabinets, providing a controlled distributed reflex port, which is free of the usual turbulence problems. The bass alignment has been chosen to allow the speakers to be used either against a wall or out in the room, depending on the listener’s preferences and room acoustics.

Acoustically the bass/mid driver is loaded by the larger lower cabinet which houses the high frequency unit and to which the passive crossover is attached. The wide dispersion Scan 19mm HF unit is isolated further by mounting on a sprung plate, acting as a mechanical filter between cabinet and driver. Mass aluminium dampers are another Naim first : thermally stable mass dampers are used on the Allae drive units and internal cabinet panels to reduce resonance. Featuring a computer modelled cast aluminium chassis, the Allae 200mm bass unit is fitted with a split-mass aluminium phase correction device, which also improves heat dissipation and power handling. Standards of manufacture, as always with Naim products, equal those of design from perfect matching of drive units down to delicate measurements of acoustic materials. Visually the Allae is excellent and is available in a range of modern, real wood veneers.

  • Separate drive units for increased acoustic performance
  • Cabinet separation forms a distributed, low turbulence reflex port
  • Computer modeled aluminium chassis
  • Externally mounted crossover provides advantages through mechanical isolation
  • Available in three finishes, Black, Cherry and Maple
